Hi folks,

I might be speaking at an event about podcasting, but I would like to talk on how podcasting has penetrated the world, what is being spent on advertising on podcasts around the world (I saw the article pertaining to the US market) as well as give many facts as to why podcasting is the medium to go for.

The problem is that I don't know where to look and was wondering if there is a central place where I can find such information.  I would like to convince people who have never heard of podcasting to consider starting their own shows and reap the benefits of being involved in such an awesome community.   If you are a blogger, why you should consider starting a podcast and how your show can compliment your blog and visa versa.

I hope that there is some useful info out there that I can use, or as a matter of fact, anybody who has some or other speaking engagement can use in their talk.

Hi Glen

In research I did which involved interviewing various national people "in the know", here is what I found:

In terms of podcast creation, China leads with around 20,000, followed by Germany (4000) and France (3000).  After factoring in country size, France and Germany have the largest number of local podcasts .  Italy, Spain, Australia and Denmark each produce around 220 podcasts.  Italy and France have the same population, with Spain slightly less populated.

The number of people listening to podcasts is a good indicator of relative adoption on a national level.  While these numbers can not be verified, they are somewhat indicative. In France, 3,800,000 French have listened to podcasts.  In Italy the estimated number is 200,000, and 40,000 in Spain.  The most popular podcasts in France can have 100,000 downloads per episode and 20,000 in Germany.  In England, Ricky Gervais has 400,000 downloads worldwide.  One issue holding back podcast adoption in China is the lack of iTunes in Chinese.

That is what I was told, for what it is worth.

Hey,

in Germany we had over 11 million downloads last month. There are over 3 million listeners and the popular shows reach more than 100.000 downloads an episode.

You can find a number of interesting facts about podcasting on this page: http://tellerrand.typepad.com/tellerrand/podcastumfrage/

Ciao
Fabio.

A few thoughts as a follow up to my earlier quick response. Your questions perfectly illustrate the need for a central knowledge base on global podcasting, which is exactly what we are planning with the WPF Intel section. As of now it just covers a few basic areas. In a couple of weeks though, a wiki structured around topics and geography will be integrated to collaboratively fill in the blanks. I'll send out a mailing with more specifics soon.

Convincing an audience, who is not at all or only remotely familiar with podcasting, to get seriously involved is in my experience a delicate sell. You absolutely have to go back to non-tech basics and just focus on the essentials of podcast publishing and the inherent benefits and advantages over conventional publishing/broadcasting. With a more experienced crowd, specifics on an array of foreign (advertising) markets, concepts and business models are important but in this instance, and again in my experience, the basic focus should be on the potential impact on the national and/or local media markets, most easily exemplified by the American experience (as there is quite some US data available that covers all important areas). The mobile aspect of podcasting stands out in any case, be it the 'traditional' anywhere/anytime aspect of the iPod or, looking forward, the prospect of podcasting as an integral part of the mobile phone. Audiences, whatever their background and especially those involved with publishing, tend to plug in quickly the moment you connect the dots between the concept of podcast publishing and the ubiquitous mobile, with its 5 unique elements: 1. the first truly personal mass media 2. the first always-on mass media 3. the first always-carried mass media 4. the first mass media with a built-in payment mechanism and 5. offering the media audience the input tool, at the point of creative impulse.

Again, quite a delicate sell as even early adopter facts may seem crystal ball musings to a more traditional audience. Yet, mixing both the bare essentials of podcasting with its obvious opportunities and the crystal ball-like vision of, for example, the up and coming mobile podcasting experience worked for me on several occasions with the kind of audience you describe. Hope you let us know how things went and please keep an eye on the Intel section!

Hi All:

In spanish we have some data (from spanish speaking countries and the rest of the world). There are some european surveys and polls linked here:

http://podcastellano.com/temas/audiencia
(in spanish but with links to original sources, most of them in english)

One of the most recent is published also in WPF news section.

Hi - I saw the article and the graph on WPF, interesting suff, but I find it very hard to believe, that there are just as many people who read blogs as who hear podcasts. Can you gibe me some more info about the survey?

You are welcome to email me at karin@podblog.dk

Hey,

Today's world is very fastly moving towards podcasting as it is a very convenient and impressive way of advertising and letting people about their stuff.
I will not talk about any data and information about podcasting. Just want to let you know guys that a very new concept in podcast is podcast transcription which is very helpful for doctors, lawyers, and so on.

Prateek

Yes, Prateek. There are some people who like to read text along with the audio, so that they can follow it better and there are also another section of people who would prefer to read just the transcript than listen to audio.
Therefore, podcast transcription will not only help doctors and lawyers but also people of other profession.
